We Haven’t Seen All Our Possibilities Yet

When we think about our dreams, we often imagine a very specific path to reach them. We picture the destination, but we also picture how we will get there.

Perhaps you know exactly what you want to achieve. You have an idea of what your life will look like when you get there, and maybe even a plan for how to make it happen.

But there is something we tend to forget: we can only plan with the possibilities we can see today.

Why You Need to Stay Open to New Possibilities

There may be opportunities ahead that we haven’t thought of yet. There may be people we haven’t met, ideas we haven’t had, and paths we don’t even know exist.

And sometimes, the route we imagined isn’t the route that takes us there. That doesn’t necessarily mean the goal was wrong—it may simply mean that we couldn’t see the whole journey from where we were standing.

Think about an athlete preparing for a competition:

  • They can visualise themselves crossing the finish line.
  • They use that image to guide their preparation.
  • But they cannot predict every step of the race.

Something unexpected might happen. Their strategy might change, or they might have to adjust their pace based on what happens around them. The finish line remains the same—the path doesn’t have to.

Changing the Path, Not the Goal

The same is true in our own lives. Perhaps you dream of:

  • Changing your career
  • Creating something of your own
  • Travelling somewhere new
  • Improving a relationship
  • Building a life that feels more like yours

Make the plan. Take the first step. Work towards the goal. But don’t become so attached to the original route that you fail to notice a better one when it appears.

An unexpected opportunity isn’t necessarily a distraction from your dream — it might be part of the way there.

Taking the First Step Opens New Doors

Sometimes we discover a possibility only after we’ve taken the first step:

  1. A conversation leads to an idea.
  2. An idea leads to an opportunity.
  3. An opportunity opens a door we didn’t know was there.

That is one reason why having a clear goal is so useful. Once we know what we’re working towards, we become better at recognizing things that can help us get there. We don’t have to predict every possibility in advance—we just have to remain open to them.

Trust the Journey Forward

So if your plans don’t unfold exactly as you imagined, don’t assume that you’ve failed.

Pause. Look around. There may be another way forward—perhaps even one that you couldn’t have imagined when you first decided where you wanted to go.

We haven’t seen all our possibilities yet.
And perhaps that’s one of the most exciting things about the future.
